Google Fast Flip – Fastest Way to Read Customized News Online

Google Fast Flip is an online news aggregator web application that lets users discover and share news articles. It was launched in beta by Google Labs. Fast Flip provides a new reading experience that combines qualities of print and the Web. Like a print magazine, Fast Flip lets you browse sequentially through bundles of recent news, headlines and popular topics, as well as feeds from individual top publishers. As the name suggests, flipping through content is very fast, so you can quickly look through a lot of pages until you find something interesting. At the same time, Google provide aggregation and search over many top newspapers and magazines, and the ability to share content with your friends and community.

Google Fast Flip presents images of stories from Google’s news partners, which can be clicked on to navigate to the story on the news provider’s own website. Stories can be scrolled between using the mouse or cursor keys.

Fast Flip also personalizes the experience for you, by taking cues from selections you make to show you more content from sources, topics and journalists that you seem to like. In short, you get fast browsing, natural magazine-style navigation, recommendations from friends and other members of the community and a selection of content that is personalized.

To build Fast Flip, Google partnered with three dozen top publishers in U.S., including the New York Times, the Atlantic, the Washington Post, Salon, Fast Company and Newsweek. Now there are approximately 98 news partners, full list available here. Google hope to add more publishers in the future. Google says it will share the majority of revenue from contextual adverts with its news partners.

Google facts and figures (massive infographic)

Google has perhaps more than any other company become “The Internet Company.” It’s grown hand in hand with the internet and its entire business model has from the start been totally focused on the internet as a delivery platform.
And let’s face it, Google is a pretty interesting company. In fact, we think it’s so interesting that we put together this infographic with a ton of facts and figures about Google. We’ve been digging through Google’s SEC filings, news articles and the trusty old Wikipedia to get plenty of interesting data to include. We hope you like it!

Google: Desktops Will Be Irrelevant in Three Years’ Time

Speaking at the Digital Landscapes conference at UCD, European director of Google’s online sales John Herlihy said that Google is mostly oriented towards mobile devices, claiming they’ll become more important than desktop PCs.
“In three years time, desktops will be irrelevant. In Japan, most research is done today on smart phones, not PCs,” he said.
True, with Android (Android) and Nexus One Google has shown a commitment to extend its dominance from the online world to the mobile world. But will desktop PCs really become irrelevant? Depends on how you look at it. Google (Google) isn’t really interested in how we edit our photos; it’s interested in where we store them, and increasingly, we do that at a place is a part of their domain – the cloud.
And if your data moves to the cloud, and most of your daily online activities are done on devices such as the Nexus One and the iPad, where simple, widget-style applications cater to your precise needs, then yes, desktop PCs as we know them now will become a lot less important.

How to Embed RSS Feeds into HTML Web Pages – The Easy Way

embed rss feeds

Q. Yugalkishore is looking for a simple solution to help him embed RSS feeds from Reuters website into his HTML web pages.
A. While there are tons of scripts that convert RSS feeds into Javascript*, I recommend using Google Gadget Creator for adding feeds to web pages – it’s easy as well as customizable.
*If you are looking for a non-Javascript solution, get one of theseFlash based RSS widgets from Yourminis or WidgetBox.
add-rss-websiteStep 1: Copy the URL of that RSS feed to the clipboard (make sure you copy the location of the feed, not the website).
Step 2: Append the feed URL to this string-http://gmodules.com/ig/creator?url=
Confused ? Let me illustrate that with a quick example. Say the RSS feed address is http://feeds.labnol.org/labnol, then our string becomes:
http://gmodules.com/ig/creator?url=http://feeds.labnol.org/labnol
Step 3: Open this new link in your web browser, adjust the dimensions of the gadget, change the border color and finally click "Get the Code" button.
Place this Javascript code anywhere in your web page where you want the RSS items to be displayed.
Your site visitors can now scan the Reuters news headlines without leaving your website.

Translate Hindi Text to English with Google Translation Online

Google Translation tool has added support for Hindi, the official language of India. Google earlier introduced the English to Hindi Transliterator feature in Blogger that lets user type Hindi characters on a web page using the English keyboard.
With this new feature, you can easily translate documents, web pages, email messages and other text written in Hindi to English language instantly for free. And it works both ways so you may also use the same translation tool for converting English text to Hindi Devanagri script as well.

If you encounter a web page in Google Search results that’s written in Hindi, Google adds a “Translate this page” link next to the page so that you can directly read the Hindi page in English via the Google Translate tool.
And if you are not sure about the language of text, you can use free language identification tools to determine the name of the language that has been used to write that text.
Here’s the BBC Hindi website converted to English (हिंदी से अंग्रेजी | अंग्रेजी से हिंदी) using Google Translate. Though it’s a machine based translation, the results are fairly accurate.

Read any Web Document Directly in Google Docs – Similar to Gmail

Open as Google Document
2Gmail has this nice feature where you can open PDF files and Office documents directly in your Google Docs account bypassing the need of any desktop software like Acrobat Reader or Microsoft Office.
If you find this Gmail feature handy, you’ll probably also enjoy using the "Send to Google Docs" extension for Firefox.
Send to Google DocsThis extension (download link) lets you read online documents directly in your Google Docs account with a simple right click (see screenshot).
It works with popular file formats like PDF, Excel, Word, PowerPoint and all Open Document formats.  "Send to Docs" can also import HTML web pages in Google Docs provided they have the right extension.
You right click any document link on the web, choose "Send to Google Docs" from the context menu and the file will immediately open as a Google Document. The file also gets saved permanently in your Google Docs account.
I’ll distribute this add-on directly from the Firefox official site once it gets approved by the Mozilla team.

Useful Google Talk Bots That You Must Add as Friends

google-talk-bots

You can do lot of interesting stuff with Google Talk like get alert notifications, save bookmarks to delicious, manage web calendars, set reminders, write blogs, and so much more.
Such features can be easily integrated into Google Talk through ‘bots’ which, in simple English, are like virtual friends who are online 24×7 and will always respond with a smile to your questions or requests.
Here are the eleven most useful ‘bots’ that transform Google Talk into a more useful program:
feeds1. imfeeds@gmail.com – Add this IM Feeds bot as your Google Talk buddy and you’ll be able to read any blog or website that syndicates content via RSS feeds.
To subscribe to a website in GTalk, simply send a new IM message that says "sub labnol.org" where labnol.org is the site address that you want to read inside Google Talk.
friendfeed2. friendfeed@bot.im – This secret bot lets you post to FriendFeed from Google Talk. You may submit either hyperlinks or text messages.
3. imified@imified.com – This imified bot turns Google Talk into a real powerhouse.
imifiedYou can post bookmarks to delicious, send messages to Twitter, submit blog entries to WordPress, Tumblr or Blogger, manage events in Google Calendar, shorten long URLs, run whois and so on.
anothr4. inezhabot@gmail.com – Like IM Feeds, iNezha bot helps you read feeds inside Google Talk but this is slightly more versatile. For instance, you can simply say "digg" and it will show a list of all feeds that match that search term so you don’t have to type (or copy-paste) feed addresses.
translation5. Translation – This is a free service from Google that helps you translate words from a foreign language into your native language. Just add the relevant bot (e.g. hi2en@bot.talk.google.com for Hindi to English or en2hi@bot.talk.google.com for English to Hindi) as your buddy, send him a message and it will get translated instantly.
twitter6. Use Google Talk with Twitter – Invite twitter@twitter.com to become your friend in Google Talk and verify your account. Now whenever you IM this new friend, the message will automatically publish on your twitter account.
alarm7. Set Task Reminders – If you need to remember something important, Google Talk can send you reminders for that event.
Just add timer to your Twitter friend’s list and then add twitter@twitter.com to your buddy list in Gtalk. Now if you want to get a reminder after 50 minutes, send a direct message to twitter  like "d timer 50 pick kids from school" and a reminder will automatically pop up in your Google Talk after 50 minutes.
8. Transliteration – If you want to chat in your mother tongue (like Hindi or Tamil) but feel more comfortable using the English keyboard, Google Transliteration bot will come in handy.
For instance, add en2hi.translit@bot.talk.google.com to you friend’s list in GTalk and all messages you type in English will get transliterated in the language of your choice.  Available only for a few Indian languages.
9. Xpenser – With xpenser, you can record travel expenses via email, SMS or even Google talk. Add xpenserbot@gmail.com as your buddy and send a message like "lunch 33.2 with Bill Gates" and that will be added as an expense to your online spreadsheet that can be accessed from anywhere.
ping10. Ping.fm – Like Imified, ping.fm is one of the most useful Google bots out there especially if you are a social networking or micro-blogging addict.
Add pingdotfm@gmail.com to Gtalk and you can communicate with twitter, jaiku, wordpress, identi.ca, facebook, myspace, bebo, friendfeed, linkedin, tumblr, plaxo, friendster, delicious and more.
meshly11. Meshly – Add meshly@gmail.com as your friend and you’ll be able to post web link to your Meshly account via Google Talk. You can also add tags, categories and description to your hyperlink via Gtalk itself.

Free Website Building Tools That Are Good Replacements for Google Page Creator

Google Page Creator Alternatives

Google Page Creator is awesome – anyone can build a good looking website in minutes using the built-in templates or they can write pages externally (say in Dreamweaver) and upload them to Creator.
And everything is free – there are no ads on your pages and Google takes care of all the web hosting bills. But as they say, all good things come to an end, and so is Google Page Creator getting replaced by Google Sites.

Compare Google Sites with Google Page Creator

While Google Sites and Google Pages have common feature (like the WYSIWYG AJAX editor), they are still quite different. For instance, you can’t upload HTML pages to Google Sites and are therefore limited to using one of the built-in themes for your site design.
The second issue is that if you make a Google Site public, the associated ‘site activity log’ also becomes public – most website publisher will have reservations sharing this data with unknown visitors. Lastly, all external hyperlinks are ‘nofollow’ if that means anything to you.

Free Alternatives to Google Page Creator

Here’s a roundup of some website building services that are free and non-technical.
1. Office Live Small Business – While the name may suggest that the service is only for small business owners, just about anyone can create their website here.
